Dirk Guenter

Dirk Guenter

“You will always discover something new when gliding your hands along the pieces, feeling the flaws and seeing where things have carefully been melted, painted and crafted into a single object of art.”

Dirk Guenter, born in 1964 in Hamburg, Germany, is an artist whose creative journey has been shaped by diverse influences and experiences. Drawing inspiration from religions and myths, even though he no longer practices or adheres to them, Guenter sees religions as a framework for moral standards and rules that foster peaceful coexistence. Having traveled extensively for 25 years, exploring cultures and local habits in Europe and the Far East, Guenter’s artistic path took a significant turn when he started working in Portugal in the late 1990s.

Falling in love with the country, particularly Porto, Guenter made a life-changing decision to leave Germany and relocate to Porto. In 2016, he established his own workshop, “Oficina 13,” marking the beginning of his full-time commitment to art. The number 13, despite its unlucky connotations, holds personal significance for Guenter, symbolizing resilience and defiance against the odds.

Before venturing into Fine Arts, Guenter crafted unique lamps, side tables, and coffee tables entirely by hand. His pieces, decorated with hand-sculpted plants and animals, transform functional furniture into expressive sculptures. Guenter’s artistic philosophy involves a deliberate blending of opposites—fragile with solid, bad with good, life with death—imbuing his work with hidden messages. Unrestricted by a particular style or message, Guenter aims to approach his artwork with respect.

Working with bronze on decorative parts, Guenter eschews measurements, opting to carve sculptures from solid metals. This hands-on approach ensures each piece is unique, emphasizing the imperfections that invite viewers to experience the artwork tactilely. Guenter believes that the flaws in his creations encourage people to observe and appreciate his work differently.

Guenter’s biography reveals a transformative period in his life, from his upbringing in a Catholic household to the challenges faced after his father’s early death. His time as a student in a Benedictine monastery boarding school was marked by an oppressive atmosphere, shaping his character as a shy yet creative individual.

In 2003, Guenter immigrated from Germany to Porto, Portugal, a move that marked a significant chapter in his life. Establishing Oficina 13 as his workshop in Matosinhos/Porto Harbor District, he crafts lamps, side tables, sculptures, and accessories using materials such as wood, metals (bronze, brass, copper, lead), and leather. Each piece is a unique, handmade sculpture created with simple tools and passion.

The workshop, adjacent to a carpenter’s shop with imported wood dating back to the 1990s, adds to the uniqueness of Guenter’s creations. His side tables, often crafted from exciting pieces of wood, feature wheels made of solid brass. The lamps, inspired by Portugal’s grapevines, breathe new life into discarded trunks. Guenter meticulously sands, treats, and decorates these trunks, using metal sheets or inserts, vintage Bakelite switches and plugs, and fabric-covered cables from Italy.

In the realm of functional art, Guenter’s lamps and side tables stand as testament to his commitment to preserving and repurposing materials, creating pieces that tell stories and invite tactile exploration. Through his work, Guenter invites others to enter his world—a world where imperfections become points of fascination and where the artist’s passion for craftsmanship is evident in every carefully crafted detail.

I first met Dirk while studying art history in Rome, introduced by his son Miguel, who sensed an immediate connection between Dirk and me. I remember speeding through the historic streets of Porto in Miguel’s vintage BMW, reaching the rooftop of Dirk and his wife Catherine’s townhouse. The three of us—Miguel, Catherine, and Dirk—gathered on the rooftop, spending hours conversing while admiring the spectacular sunset of Porto over the ocean, with seagulls soaring and the wind gusting.

The following day, Dirk warmly welcomed me into Oficina 13, his studio. Passing through the entrance next to the carpentry studio, I stepped into Dirk’s workspace, featuring a frosted glass roof and cement walls adorned with captivating mythical natural sculptures. Seated in Dirk’s handcrafted art chairs across from each other at an impressive fifteen-foot Amazonian wood table, embellished with an intricately detailed pond scene within the prominent knot at its center, we delved into discussions about Dirk’s artistic pursuits. Our conversation spanned his profound interests in religion, myth, the natural world, craftsmanship, and technique.

As I marveled at the studio space, we engaged in our first extensive conversations on the history of art, his practice, and life and death. Towards the end of our discussion, Dirk presented me with a bracelet named “Roll the Dice.” With a confident gesture, he handed me the bracelet, affirming, “I know you’ll wear it.” This moment marked the beginning of a lasting friendship that transcends the constraints of time.
